Mappemonde by leading Greek artist, George Lappas, for the Venice Biennale of 1988
One of the most significant works of Greek post-war sculpture, George Lappas’ Mappemonde traces the map of the world as a sculptural narrative, drawing on personal experiences. Mappemonde consists of a perforated metal house along with 3,000 sculpted figures populating the surrounding space. These interdependent figures form a synthesis of bodies —a crowd— which alludes to the idea of archaeological accumulation, and can be seen as a depiction of intercultural worlds coming together, or as a history of humankind. Extending from the 2nd to the 10th floor of the hotel’s atrium, “Mappemonde,” comes as a delineated, “encapsulated” memory field which is in turn “encapsulated” into the memory of an urban residence. This as charting, a sculptural narrative that starts from the artist’s personal experiences but at the same time opens up to a universal scale. George Lappas Is indisputably one of the most important artists of his generation, as is his highly significant contribution to the evolution of contemporary art in Greece.

Composed of 3,000 metal pieces, Mappemonde is one of the best-known and most important works of Greek post-war sculpture and reflects on the relationship between the personal and universal, the local and global. The genius of its placement in Athens Capital Hotel is that the designers have converted the previously horizontal display into an astonishing vertical installation, soaring up the building to “break through” the 10th floor roof top. Lappas’s version of his own house, which originally sat in the centre of the sculpture, is now perched over the atrium void, open to guests brave enough to venture inside.
Ακροκέραμο (Akrokeramo) means "distal tile" and was used to protect roofs from the entrance of birds and snakes. These forms from clay, in various sizes and motifs, have usually a naturalistic design.
Our Iconic Object illustrates a Akrokeramo of Parthenon, which had 126 marble antefixes with radial blades and rosettes with 13 leaf design.
The very slight asymmetry in the project reveals a hidden movement that gave life to the decoration.
The Greek Flag

Tasos Chonias was born in 1974. He is a Greek painter whose artworks today resides in major private collections, institutions and galleries around the world. Since 2005, he has been focusing exclusively on oil paintings with themes evolving from a series of interiors, to landscapes and his most recent series of cars, painted against urban backgrounds.
Tasos started painting at a very young age; at the age of 16 he did wall paintings at commercial and non-commercial spaces and later turned to scenography, movie-poster design and conservation of old wall paintings. He has participated in important group exhibitions and held his first solo exhibition at "Agathi" Art Gallery. Today, his paintings are being auctioned at large auction houses across Europe, such as the Bonhams of London.
His Interiors work is inspired by the lives of people who lived inside neoclassical buildings like the one that hosts his atelier in Kipseli. Because of his particular depiction of sun light entering the spaces, his collection of Interiors paintings is often described by art critics as presenting "the illusion of space that belongs to a different, third dimension".
Tasos has also received significant awards and prizes over the years. In 2011, he received the second place award among 5,777 contestants in a competition organized by the Saatchi Gallery of London.

Christos Baloukos was born in Athens, where he currently lives and works. He has studied painting, graphic design and visual Hagiography.In 2019 Christos represented Greece in the International Art exhibition: “Diverse Civilization, Shared Road - international Art Exhibition by Artistsfor Peace’’ that was part of the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization BishkekSummit 2019” and had received two (2) awards, by the Government ofKyrgystan & the Bejing Cultural Exchange Center, for his painting “IvironMonastery”.
Some main features of his work is the limited palette 3 plus 2 color, painting with palette knife who creates beautiful texture and of course the fresh watercolors with color depth.
He has also participated in exhibitions in UK & Italy and his paintings can be found in museums and private collections in various places around the world.
The summerr of 2021 have the honor to be the graphic designer of David Cronenberg new film, “Crimes of the Future” with Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart.
